Alma was from the adjoining village of East Derby she had quite a local reputation as a singer. The salary was very modest, still the village people considered it large for a young woman. With the exception of the organist, the leading soprano was the only paid musician in the large choir. She had sung for the last time the Sunday before, and Alma Way had been engaged to take her place. There had been much complaint, and after long deliberation the church-officers had made known their decision as mildly as possible to the old singer.

The spring had come with a rush during the last few days. The people noticed it, for it was the first time that year that the trees had so murmured in the wind.
